Hasskamp excited for next step in election District 5

Kris Hasskamp said it’s been a whirlwind since being announced as the top vote getter in Tuesday’s Primary for Crow Wing County District 5.

“I’ve actually been a bit overwhelmed since then,” said Hasskamp via a phone interview on Thursday. “I am just amazed and so grateful that the people made this happen. By doing this, so many people are saying that they want someone to speak up for them and make sure the process is open and transparent.”

The 61-year-old from Rabbit Lake, racked up 545, or 32.23, percent of the votes in Tuesday’s Primary election, coming out ahead of current incumbent Doug Houge. Hasskamp and Houge will move on to November’s general election.

Hasskamp said her next step will be to listen to the people to help form her platform.

“I want to be the voice for people who want to see the county in District 5 change,” she said. “I want to be passionate for things in our district and a lot of people are not happy with the way things are, that was clear when I came out number one (in Tuesday’s votes) that there is a discontent there a little bit.

“My new campaign will offer people the opportunity to tell me what they want and what needs to be done. They are going to form my platform. Whatever the people in District 5 decide. That’s my home area and that’s who I’m working for.”

Hasskamp currently works as an independent consultant at Crosby-Ironton schools and was a District 12A state representative from 1989-2001.
