Nisswa school to offer all day ECSE program this fall
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) all day program will be offered as a pilot program at Nisswa Elementary School this fall.
Nisswa principal Erin Herman said the ECSE program will begin Sept. 10 and be offered all day Monday through Thursday.
“We’re so excited to be offering early childhood learning to our young children,” said Herman. “When we heard that we could have this program all day we jumped at the opportunity. The parents are pretty excited.”
Herman said the school’s intent is to build partnerships with Nisswa families, the school and Brainerd Community Education to provide integrated ECFE and School Readiness programming at the school.
Herman said the programming is recommended for 12 hours or more a week and that the best practice for a student with autism is to spend around 21 hours a week.
Herman said in the past, many of the school’s young children are in daycare settings full days outside of the three or four half days at Nisswa School. She also said that the children were on the bus longer than they were in Nisswa’s ECSE’s program.
“The additional program time will allow for longer sessions for teachers to work with young children with skills and provide opportunities for increased social/emotional and language development,” said Herman.
Herman said the transportation office is working on morning and afternoon routes.
