Benedict man killed in logging accident

CASS LAKE — A 50-year-old Benedict man was killed Tuesday in Cass County after being struck by a large tree that fell from a logging boom, Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reported.

The Cass County Sheriffs Office received a report at 2:51 p.m. of a logging accident in Pike Bay Township, south of the Nary Road near Cass Lake. Officers and emergency personnel responded to the scene and found that the male victim was struck by a large tree that had fallen from a logging boom. The Benedict man was transported by ambulance to Cass Lake Indian Health Services, where he was pronounced deceased. The victim was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The sheriff’s office is withholding the name pending notification of family members.

The Cass County Sheriffs Office was assisted by the Pike Bay Police Department, Leech Lake Tribal Police and the Leech Lake Ambulance service.
