14-year-old Onamia girl killed when struck by vehicle

ONAMIA — A 14-year-old Onamia student was killed Friday after she was struck by a vehicle while walking with friends to a football game, the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The victim was walking west on 350th Street toward Onamia school when she was struck from behind by a motorist who also was travelling westbound on 350th Street between Highway 169 and 125th Avenue.

Mille Lacs County Sheriff Brent C. Lindgren reported that the girl was transported by ambulance to the Mille Lacs Hospital in Onamia, where she died. Her identity is being withheld until family notifications can be completed. The driver of the vehicle, Michal Kunesh, 37 of rural Onamia, was not injured.

An off-duty Mille Lacs County deputy and a Mille Lacs Health System Emergency Medical Technician happened to be driving on the same roadway going to the same football game and stopped and administered first aid at the scene, Lindgren said.

The incident was reported at 7:14 p.m.

Assisting the sheriff’s office on scene were the Onamia Fire Department, Mille Lacs Ambulance Service, Minnesota State Patrol and the Mille Lacs Tribal Police Department.

The fatal is still under investigation at this time by the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

In a press release, Lindgren said he extended heartfelt condolences of the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office to the family and friends of the victim.
