Boat capsizes, two victims recovered

BENA — A 43-year-old Minneapolis man and a 53-year-old Princeton man drowned after their boat capsized Saturday on Lake Winnibigoshish, in northern Cass County near Bena, reported the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

It was reported at 6:38 p.m. Saturday, that a boat capsized. Officers located the boat and several items floating in the water near the boat. An initial search of the area was performed until dark. The area was searched by boat, as well as by Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. Conditions were windy with wind gusts between 30-40 mph. The search resumed at daylight Sunday. The Minneapolis man was located near shore at 9:35 a.m. Sunday. The search continued and at 5 p.m., the body of the Princeton man was located approximately 200 yards from where the boat was initially found. Both victims were taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

The search was conducted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Lakes Area Dive Team, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Leech Lake Tribal Police and Leech Lake Conservation Officers.
