Native plant seed mixes now available for late fall seeding

Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) invites the general public to purchase native seed mixes for $30 per 4 oz. pack at the SWCD Office.

The mixes contain seeds of local ecotypes that were harvested and packed within 100 miles of Crow Wing County by Minnesota Native Landscapes, Inc. of Otsego.

“We are excited for this opportunity to provide area landowners with local seeds at an incredible price” said Beth Hippert, SWCD district technician, in a news release.

Three mixes are available: bank stabilization, shoreline buffer, and filter garden. The mixes contain seeds of 20-30 species of native plants and each packet covers 500 square feet. Each mix contains species that are suited to poor soils, dry, moist, or wet conditions and full or part sun. The species also grow deep roots that help hold and build soil, prevent erosion, improve pollutant removal, and grow showy flowers that attract birds and butterflies.

Examples of the plant species include: blazing star, black-eyed Susan, wild bergamot, blue flag iris, little bluestem, fragrant hyssop, blue vervain, and prairie coreopsis.

The seeds may be mixed 1:2 with wet sand and hand broadcast in spring or fall. Fall seeding will have the most success after the first frost, usually mid-October. Water the area weekly after seeds germination; but no watering is needed after plants become fully established in two to three years.

Winter wheat has been added to the mix as a cover crop. This helps reduce weed pressure and controls erosion until the native plants are established. For more information, contact Beth Hippert via email beth.hippert@crowwingswcd.org or by phone 828-6197.
