Over 140 arrested after armed eviction of pipeline protest site

Unidentified explosion injured two in Deerwood

An explosion Friday injured two juvenile males in Deerwood, officials reported Tuesday.

According to the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s office, about 6:22 p.m. the Crow Wing County Bomb Squad went to city property on Broadway in Deerwood where two explosive devices, including mortar fireworks and bottle rockets were found. One of the devices had exploded and the other one was intact and removed for storage with the bomb squad. The Crosby and Deerwood police departments assisted at the scene.

Deerwood Mayor Mike Aulie said he heard that one of the juvenile males lost a thumb in the accident and both suffered from chemical burns. The names of the juveniles injured in the explosion have not been released.

A Crosby Police report said the juveniles were taken to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center where they were being treated. Aulie said he believes the boys were treated in the Twin Cities over the weekend.

Deerwood Police Chief Harry Gottsch said the incident is still under investigation by the Deerwood Police Department.
