Record setting blood drive in Emily

EMILY — Recently representatives from St. Paul’s American Red Cross headquarters observed the Lakers Lions Blood Drive held in Emily. They witnessed a record setting blood drive for the area. A total of 144 pints of life saving blood was collected after their assigned challenging goal was raised from 119 to 140 pints. Previous highest collection was 125 pints, over the past 24 years and 59 bloodmobiles. With extra Red Cross staff, double red cell machines, the higher goal assignment, and computer recorded appointments, the donor flow was quite even throughout most of the day. The majority of donors were able to complete their donating process in less than one hour, including the time that it took to enjoy their root beer floats. There were eight deferred donors but no incomplete donations, which were not included in the final count. All donors, with the additional three first time donors were very appreciated by helping the drive to reach their goal. These included first timers: Lion Maria Boyd, Linda Conrad and Michael Moritz. One gallon pins were awarded to Lion Karla Blevins, Katherine Bullock, Debi Fox, Eric Froidcoeur, Wanda Grecula, Lion Joni Larson and Brenda Wood. Paulette Berndt, Stephanie Bright, Terri Datzman, Lion Will Jones, Susan LaFrance and Lynn Olson received their two gallon pins. Three gallon pins were presented to Ardith Buchite, Lion Nancy Moritz and Myrna Sorvari. Russell Philstrom was given his 4 gallon pin while 5 gallon pins were well earned by Douglas Greseth and Sara Minerich. Massage Therapist, Robin Fish donated door prize gift certificates to winners: Ardith Buchite, Heather Jones, Sue Kyner, Amy Donovan, Sean Thedke and Colleen Rousu. The Emily area blood drive is sponsored by the Laker Lions of Emily, Outing and Fifty Lakes who served donors root beer floats, courtesy of the Red Cross. The bloodmobile will be returning to Emily Jan. 14, 2013; from noon to 6 p.m. Donors or volunteers may call coordinator, Nancy Moritz at 218-763-3097, to sign up for this upcoming blood drive.
