VFW, DAV present $3,000 to CLC veterans’ center

The Brainerd Disabled American Veterans (DAV), beneficiary of $3,000 from Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1816 in Garrison, recently presented a check for the same amount to the Central Lakes College (CLC) Veterans Resource Center (VRC).

“We at Central Lakes College sincerely appreciate the tremendous amount of community support, donations and assistance we receive,” said Kathy Marshik, VRC director, in a news release. “This has changed the lives of our veterans, current military members and dependents who attend college in Brainerd. We have been able to assist veterans in the community as well, with gas cards, food cards, guidance and resources we could not have provided without your help.”

Other donators to the VRC include: Brainerd Purple Heart, Randall VFW, Brainerd VFW, Brainerd American Legion, Brainerd Purple Heart Auxiliary, Little Falls American Legion, Royalton American Legion and CLC Student Senate.

Through the Harvest Food Program, the following restaurants donate weekly to the VRC: Caribou Coffee, Pizza Hut and Olive Garden.

“These generous donations have put food on tables for families and a free lunch every day for veterans, dependents and service members,” Marshik said. “There are many more entities that have contributed in various ways. Most commonly it’s veterans helping veterans, which is truly heartwarming. The amount of support today’s generation of veterans, service members and families have is amazing, almost overwhelming. This would never have happened without the push from generations of veterans.”
