Kiwanis makes donations
Baxter Lakes Area and Friends Kiwanis Club donates more than $5,000
The Kiwanis Club of Baxter Lakes Area and Friends hosted its annual awards banquet on Sept. 23, at Bonanza Steakhouse. The club reported donating more than $5,000 to local youth charities and organizations in the past year.
At the banquet, Kiwanis Minnesota-Dakotas District Lt. Gov. Betz Tepley installed Mike Schwartzwald as president, Karl Samp as president-elect, Ruth Nelson as treasurer and Bill Fortune III as secretary. Incoming and current board of directors are Greg Anderson, Dave Csanda, Kevin Dens, Jean Collins, Betty Jessen and Shawn Fortune.
Greg Anderson and Dan Fundingsland were recognized as the Kiwanians of the Year.
Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to Kevin Dens and Pat Pickar for their work on the Lakes Country Triathlon and to Dave Csanda, Greg Anderson and Karl Samp for their work with the Terrific Kids Program at Baxter School. Also recognized were Marlowe Fortune, Shawn Fortune Ruth Nelson and Shannon Fortune for their work with the triathlon and Brainerd Sharing Bread Kitchen; and Darrel Olson (Baxter Mayor), Mary Reetz and Roy Rauen for their efforts with the Lakes Country Triathlon other areas of the Baxter Lake Area and Friends Kiwanis Club. Additionally, Tyanne Rezac (Baxter Elementary), Marwin Bogue and Jean Collins were recognized for their work with the K-Kids Kiwanis Club at Baxter Elementary School.
The following charities and organizations benefitted from Baxter Kiwanis Club donations in 2011-2012: Crisis Line, Youth as Resources, FRED, Key Club, Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen, Brainerd Food Shelf, Kiwanis International Foundation, Healthy Brains for Children initiative, MN-DAK Kiwanis Foundation, MN-DAK Kiwanis Outreach, Day of the Young Child, Good Samaritan Bowl, Terrific Kids Program, Timber Bay, Toys for Kids, Lord of Life Children’s Programs, Mid-MN Women’s Center, Brainerd Lakes Area Early Childhood Coalition, Brainerd Nordic Ski Club and the Brainerd Schools’ Swim and Cross Country Ski teams.
About the Baxter Lakes Area and Friends Kiwanis Club
The Baxter Lakes Area and Friends Kiwanis Club meets Tuesday mornings at 7 a.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church. All are welcome. Kiwanis is dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time, and the Baxter club places its major focus on youth programming and support. The Club sponsors K-Kids, Terrific Kids and the BUG programs at Baxter Elementary. The Club also holds the Lakes Area Triathlon in Baxter every August with proceeds benefiting youth and community activities in the Baxter/Brainerd lakes area.
