Samp receives national river award

Karl Samp of Brainerd received the 2012 Distinguished Service Award recently at the Mississippi River Parkway Commission Annual Meeting in Louisville, Ky.

As a citizen representative, Samp represents the Brainerd to Elk River Region on the Mississippi River Parkway Commission of Minnesota (MN-MRPC). In the award nomination, MN-MRPC Chair Sheldon Johnson highlighted several examples of Karl’s consistent and dedicated service to the Commission and Great River Road.

The mission of the MN-MRPC is to promote, preserve and enhance the resources of the Mississippi River Valley and to develop the highways and amenities of the Great River Road. The Minnesota Great River Road is a 575-mile National Scenic Byway stretching from Lake Itasca to the Iowa border. It includes 60 communities and 21 counties, packaged into six unique destination areas. The commission works to leverage resources and partnerships, and to support activities of localities and agencies along the river as related to their mission.

Examples of the MN-MRPC’s recent activity include development and distribution of maps and travel information; regional videos; Great River Road interpretive panels; historic wayside restorations; community Google Mapping workshops; participation on local committees and planning groups; and monitoring of issues along the Great River Road. Work will begin soon on development of a new Corridor Management Plan to guide the work of the commission for the next 10–15 years.
