BBB to celebrate 100th anniversary

BBB to formally mark 100-year anniversary

Inaugural meeting held in Minneapolis on Oct. 17, 1912

The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB), the first BBB in the world, will mark its 100th anniversary Wednesday.

A century ago on this date, the first meeting of the Vigilance Committee — which became the BBB — was in downtown Minneapolis in the Andrus Building.

“Though we are immensely proud to be the first Better Business Bureau and have great reverence for our roots, we are equally excited about our future,” said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota, in a news release. “We look forward to another century of stewardship and service to the public and the business community.”

The BBB will mark the actual anniversary of their founding with a small gathering among staff, waiting until Oct. 29, to formally celebrate this historic milestone at its Integrity Awards Centennial Gala at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. The event is from 6 to 9 p.m.

The theme for the BBB’s year-long Centennial Celebration is “Lighting the Way,” a nod to their roots — the BBB logo is a torch — and their role in establishing a marketplace where buyers and sellers can trust each other. The past year has been marked by a series of special events which have focused on building marketplace trust and highlighting the BBB’s mission of promoting the highest ethical relationship between businesses and the public —

“We thought our Integrity Awards would be the perfect way to cap a truly special year,” Badgerow said. “It’s a night where we celebrate upstanding businesses which exemplify ethics, award our Student of Integrity scholarships to deserving high school seniors, and we are especially honored this year to have Holly Petraeus serve as our keynote speaker.”
