Shellito to be keynote speaker at WDC School's Veterans Day

WADENA — Wadena-Deer Creek Schools announced that Retired Maj. Gen. Larry Shellito will be the keynote speaker for its Veterans Day program on Nov. 12 at the WDC Middle/High School Gymnasium.

“We are excited to welcome Maj. Gen. Shellito to Wadena-Deer Creek Schools and we are honored that he will be giving the address to the students and community at our Veterans Day program,” said WDC Music Instructor Mike Ortmann, who coordinates the school’s Veterans Day program.

Shellito currently serves as commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. As commissioner, Shellito is charged with assisting the state’s 380,000 veterans and their families. He was appointed as the 17th commissioner in January 2011.

Before his appointment as commissioner, Shellito is most known for his seven-year tenure as leading the Minnesota National Guard through its largest post-World War II deployment and developing the Yellow Ribbon program to ease soldier’s return to the United States from overseas duty. His spent 37 years in the National Guard, retiring as Major General the fall of 2010.

Shellito enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968, spending time in Vietnam. He joined the Minnesota Army National Guard in 1973. He’s been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star.

A native of Moorhead, Shellito also served as president of Alexandria Technical College. He and his wife, Evonne, live in Woodbury. They have two adult daughters and three grandchildren.

WDC’s Veterans Day program will include the presentation of colors, essay readings by students, and patriotic music by the WDC Band and Choir. WDC Superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom will serve as master of ceremonies. A pancake breakfast will be served by the Wadena-Deer Creek Student Council with assistance by the Wadena Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Committee from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Commons. This will be for veterans and their families.

The public is encouraged to attend this Veterans Day ceremony.
