Two ATV crashes leaves one dead, two injured and one facing charges

AITKIN — The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash that claimed the life of a 50-year-old St. Paul man.

Mark J. Moser Friday was operating a 2011 Arctic Cat 550, east on 297th Street in Farm Island Township south of Aitkin, when he apparently lost control and rolled the ATV on the roadway. Moser was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash was reported to the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office at around 6:45 p.m. Friday.

While investigating this crash, it was learned by the officers that the same ATV had been involved in another crash a short time earlier. During the earlier crash, Christopher M. Gareis, 38, of Woodbury was operating the ATV with Robert J. Haffley, 48, of Farmington as a passenger. The ATV apparently ran off the road on 297th Street and hit some trees. Both Gareis and Haffley were transported by North Ambulance to Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Gareis, who was treated and released, was arrested and booked into the Aitkin County Jail on a charge of criminal vehicular operation.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in both crashes.

South Aitkin First Responders, North Air Care and the Minnesota State Patrol assisted the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
