Midwest Selects hip hop group returns for Brainerd show

After playing homecoming concerts at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota State University, Mankato in recent weeks, local hip hop artists Midwest Selects are excited for their own homecoming.

The trio, made up of brothers Seth and Nik Helland, ages 21 and 18 respectively, and friend Daniel Lauer, 20, will be making their first Brainerd headlining appearance from 6:30-10 p.m. on Saturday at The Pavilion, part of the Legacy Clubhouse at Cragun’s Resort.

“It’s exciting to come back home because this is where it all began,” said Seth. “And this is where our following began, so we want to just say thank you for that with this concert.”

Midwest Selects began their venture into the music world in 2009 after what started as an after school joke with friends. The group has since flourished, with an album release in July, “Cue,” inching up the iTunes charts and through performances at venues around the state, including the hip hop coveted First Ave. Midwest Selects was also crowned “Next to Blow Up” in the 2012 Twin Cities Urban Music Awards and have seen the crowds at each concert grow tremendously.

“We’ve really started to make a name for ourselves, being able to headline shows and seeing more and more people come out pumped up,” said Nik. “That’s probably the most exciting part and it at times gets me a little nervous.

“But once we step on that stage it’s awesome.”

And Seth said he plans on seeing that crowd reach new heights during Saturday’s show.

“We have our family here who are coming out and people who have followed us around maybe a little bit but weren’t able to make it to our shows in the (Twin) Cities,” said Seth, who added that all of the Midwest Selects music is still family friendly, with no cursing or inappropriate content. “So this show is for all of them.”

The group will take the stage around 8:30 p.m. with opening acts including fellow Minnesota artists Gaines, NizzyNate, Cato and Run starting at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets will be $8 in advance and $10 at the door. For more information or to purchase your tickets, call Seth at (218) 831-7701. Tickets and merchandise are also available at
