To drive from Breezy Point, Minn. to Breezy Point in Queens, N.Y. would take 23 hours and 50 minutes, according to Google.

Online, they appear much closer. As people search the Internet for ways to help hurricane victims, they are picking up on a Breezy Point about 1,369 miles from the impact zone.

Breezy Point, the one just off the shores of Pelican Beach, has been getting calls with offers of donations, including clothing to help residents whose homes were obliterated in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

The help is meant for that other Breezy Point, the one off the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Queens borough of New York City. Breezy Point, N.Y., on the western end of Rockaway Peninsula, is described as New York City’s beach town with homes “elbow to elbow” in the largely Irish-American community. The neighborhood is some 1,369 miles from Breezy Point in Crow Wing County. The hurricane and the devastating fire that swept though the community reduced more than 100 homes to ashes or charred remnants.

Besides callers looking for ways to help hurricane victims, others are looking for information on displaced loved ones. The calls have been so frequent, the Breezy Point Police Department and city hall now have the proper support numbers on hand to refer people to the correct places for their searches or donations to a distant city with the same name.
