Koering defeats Trusty

■ Koering leads Trusty

With nearly half the precincts reporting, Paul Koering, former state senator, was ahead of incumbent Crow Wing County District 1 Commissioner Phil Trusty.

As of midnight Tuesday, there were 34 of 64 precincts reporting.

“It looks really strong,” Koering said. “I really feel honored that the people have once again put their trust in me to serve as their county commissioner — at least it looks that way so far — I really feel good about it.

“I’m the type of person who wants to work with everybody to get things done and if it turns out I win I’m going to work that way. I want to get things done rather than be an obstructionist.”

There were 234 write-in votes. Monty Jensen and Marv Begin ran write-in campaigns.

Trusty was still watching results.

Trusty said: “It’s going to be close. It will depend on Brainerd.”
