■ Nystrom, Campbell and Kern lead race for three open seats on Brainerd School Board
As the clock neared midnight Tuesday, the results were still not finalized for the Brainerd School Board’s three open seats but still some candidates held a slight edge on the competition.
With 18 of 39 precincts reported, Bob Nystrom was leading the pack throughout most of the evening with 3,988 of the votes. Hovering around the same mark was current incumbent Reed Campbell with 3,990, followed by Sue Kern at 2,849 votes.
Kern, 55, of Brainerd, has indirectly been involved with the Brainerd School District where all three of her children — ages 38, 28 and 14 — attending Brainerd High School.
Nystrom, a former eight-year school board member from 2002-2009 — losing in the 2009 election — currently resides in Baxter.
A familiar face on the Brainerd School Board, Campbell was the only current board member to file for re-election, with his current term expiring on Dec. 31, 2012. The 55-year-old has served with the Brainerd School Board since 2003.
Also running in the race for school board were Sally Jacobsen, Bob Passi, Bruce McComas, Randy Heidmann, Maurice Olson, Kari Green and Bill Cruz.
