Deadline to homestead for property taxes approaches

Owner occupied and relative occupied homestead applications are due Dec. 15, 2012, for the 2013 payable tax year.

The homestead classification may affect the amount of property tax paid in 2013 and it may affect property tax refund eligibility.

The Crow Wing County Land Services Department is trying to alert and encourage any property owners that are eligible to apply.

“Receiving homestead on your property can make a substantial reduction to your property taxes,” said Gary Griffin Land Services supervisor, in a news release. Contact Land Services to file a homestead application on or before Dec. 15, 2012, if one of the following applies:

■ You purchased a property in the past year and you, or a qualifying relative, occupy the property as your primary residence on Dec. 1, 2012; or

■ You, or a qualifying relative, occupy the property as your primary residence and the property is currently classified as seasonal or non-homestead.

A qualifying relative for homestead purposes will depend on the type of property. For residential property, a qualifying relative can be a parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, or niece of the owner. This relationship may be by blood or marriage. For agricultural property, a qualifying relative can be a child, grandchild, sibling, or parent of the owner or spouse of the owner.

In addition, contact Crow Wing County Land Services if the property owner or a qualifying relative of the property owner no longer occupy the property as the primary residence or if use of the property has changed during 2012.

Totally and permanently disabled persons who receive income due to a disability may be eligible for additional benefits. Contact Land Services for an application. Special Disabled Homestead applications are due Oct. 1 for the following year payable tax.

Applications are available at, in person at 322 Laurel St., Suite 15, Brainerd, or by calling 824-1010.
