Brainerd City Council: Rezoned property changes potential buyers
A topic of discussion for residents and the planning commission since August, the undeveloped lot at Washington and Northwest Second streets just west of the Mississippi River was brought to the city council once again on Monday night.
The lot, near Ace Hardware, has been home to Balsam Lane’s Christmas tree sales each winter and abuts the Tyrol Hills residential area. Tyrol Hills residents requested a change of zoning from B4 general business to B2 commercial business following Imgrund Motor’s interest in purchasing the land. Residents opposed the purchase in front of numerous council meetings, citing loud noises and for the well being of the neighborhood. The Imgrund’s withdrew their application for a conditional use permit on the lot Sept. 26.
Attorneys for the property’s realtors and sellers both requested that council not be too haste in making a decision tonight and requested council to consider moving the lot to B1 to better allow for building size requirements.
Steve Siller, resident of Tyrol Hills and speaking on behalf of the neighborhood, said that B2 would be best for the property given the location.
“We’re trying to save our neighborhood from manufacturing coming in there and all the negative effect that businesses like that or an automotive shop can have,” said Siller. “We’re doing this for the health and safety and well being of our neighborhood and we’re in agreement that it should be rezoned to B2.”
Council agreed with the residents and approved the motion of the first reading of moving the property from B4 to B2 with a 6-1 vote. Council member Kevin Goedker voted against the motion.
