Brainerd City Council: Officially rezoned
The undeveloped lot on Washington and Northwest Second Street, just west of the Mississippi River, will officially be rezoned to B2 from its previous B4 as decided by the Brainerd City Council Monday night.
The lot, near Ace Hardware, has been home to Balsam Lane’s Christmas tree sales each winter and abuts the Tyrol Hills residential area. Tyrol Hills residents requested a change of zoning from B4 general business to B2 commercial or neighborhood business following Imgrund Motor’s interest in purchasing the land. Residents opposed the purchase in front of numerous council meetings, citing loud noises and for the well being of the neighborhood. The Imgrund’s withdrew their application for a conditional use permit on the lot Sept. 26.
Council approved the motion of the first reading of moving the property from B4 to B2 with a 6-1 vote on Nov. 19. Council member Kevin Goedker voted against the motion.
Monday night’s vote on the final reading was unanimously in favor of adopting the resolution to rezone the property.
In other business...Brainerd Parks and Recreation Director Tony Sailer told council that a dog park is now in the fundraising process. Sailer said a dog park committee is in charge of raising the funds needed to have a dog park on the south end of Kiwanis Park. He said the primary funds will come from fencing, which Sailer added is going to be around $9,000. Sailer said additional costs would include signage and supplies.
Another step toward allowing the city of Brainerd to have primary elections in determining city seats was made on Monday, with council unanimously approving the first reading of ordinance number 1401, replacing the section to provide for primary elections.
City Attorney Tom Fitzpatrick said the language in the first reading is written to be a replicate of state statutes and guidelines.
Also approved the authorization for city staff to work toward a $300,000 grant for a Safe Routes To School (SRTS), focusing on the Garfield School area. The SRTS grant is due by mid-February and plans to get together with Brainerd School Board officials as well as community members affected by the sidewalk system, which is in the works for sometime in January 2013.
