■ Bail and Jail raises

$20,500 for March of Dimes

Dozens of people raised money for Minnesota babies Thursday at a March of Dimes jail in Baxter. The pretend jailbirds served their time behind bars Thursday at the Baxter Pizza Ranch.

The only way for jailbirds to get out of the big house was to raise a big bail. Money raised at the Brainerd Jail and Bail will provide funding for the mission of the March of Dimes to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

The jailbirds raised more than $20,500. That total includes money raised online to date and money pledged to jailbirds from friends, family and co-workers.

Jailbirds who raised more than $1,000 include: Paula Weitnauer, District Court; Serena Godbout, Stepping Stones Child Care; Chris Quisberg, president Cub Foods.

Jailbirds who raised more than $500 include: Brittany Beimut, Edina Realty; Toni Bieser, HY-Tec Construction; Mark Bublitz, Northern Pines Mental Health Center; Nancy Crimmins, American National Bank; Heidi Fagerman, Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office; Kimmy Fox, Skillet Restaurant; Junell Wendt, Landis & Gyr; Kathy Jo Rono, Landis & Gyr;

Dawn Hayes, Home Depot; Ed Hellekson, Hellekson’s Law; Amy Turk, Crow Wing Power.

Money will go to fund research, education, advocacy and community programs to help moms and babies. Nearly half a million babies are born too soon in the U.S. each year. In Minnesota, one in 10 babies is born premature.
