W-DC's VanErp resigns from coaching position
Tom VanErp’s last game as head boys basketball coach of the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines wasn’t a memorable one.
On Friday, VanErp resigned from his position as head coach. W-DC athletic director Norm Gallant sent an email Friday saying:
“Tom VanErp has resigned as the head boys basketball coach at Wadena-Deer Creek (W-DC) High School, effective immediately. W-DC assistant coach Doug Haas will serve as the interim head coach and John Paulson will serve as the assistant/junior varsity coach for the remainder of the 2012-2013 season.”
When asked why VanErp resigned Friday, Gallant said “personal reasons” and referred all other questions to VanErp.
A phone call and email to VanErp weren’t returned on Friday.
VanErp, a health and physical education teacher at W-DC was given an unpaid suspension equal to 10 work days this fall for allegedly having inappropriate photos on a school-owned iPad that were viewed by students.
W-DC School Board Chair Steve Techam told The Dispatch in an earlier story that a forensics firm was unable to retrieve the photo in question. Wadena Police Chief Bruce Uselman told The Dispatch Dec. 11 that his department reviewed information regarding the allegations against VanErp and found nothing to indicate there was any criminal intent in the incident.
The Wolverines own a 3-3 record this season after falling to Class 2A’s fourth-ranked Hawley 75-40 Thursday.
VanErp has been the Wolverines’ head coach for parts of 11 seasons. W-DC was 9-17 last season.
“Coach Haas is a first-year employee at W-DC,” said Gallant. “He is a Park Rapids graduate and a Moorhead State graduate. He did some work at Fargo South last year.
“He came in this year and did a good job as an assistant so far this season. I expect him to do a very good job. He’s a very dynamic young guy.”
