Staples driver flees crash, but doesn’t escape arrest

A 53-year-old Staples man fled the scene of a Christmas Eve crash, but was found on foot and arrested.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported alcohol was detected in the man’s system.

The broadside crash was reported at 5:11 p.m. Dec. 24 on Highway 10 between Wadena and Verndale. The Staples driver was traveling south on 151st Avenue in a Ford F150. He drove onto Highway 10 and entered the median crossover before driving into the driver’s door of Dodge passenger car.

The Dodge driver, Michael Kohler, 21, of Pelican Rapids was injured. Kohler was treated at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena and released. He was wearing a seat belt.

The Staples driver fled the scene but was located walking on a road in the area. He was arrested and booked into the Wadena County Jail for criminal vehicle operation, second-degree DWI, leaving the scene of personal injury crash and driving after cancellation.

The state patrol was assisted at the scene by Verndale Police, Wadena Police, Wadena County Sheriff’s Department, Verndale Fire Department and the Tri-County Ambulance.
