20 years ago (1993)

Brainerd senior Jacob Jensen claimed the 135-pound championship and the Warriors placed 4th out of eight teams in the Columbia Heights wrestling invitational. Jensen won all three of his matches by fall to extend his record to 12-3.

30 years ago (1983)

Twenty-one teachers will be laid off next year as the Brainerd School Board tries to dig its way out of a hole caused by a drastic drop in state revenue. “This will take us to about $470,000 . . . about half the deficit,” said Supt. Bob Gross. More layoffs could occur.

40 years ago (1973)

(Photo) Jerome Weiss of Brainerd caught this 19-9 northern at North Long Lake and weighed in the lunker – which measured 42.5 inches – at The Tackle Box, the new sporting goods store on Washington Street.

60 years ago (1953)

Someone in Brainerd must be making a collection of automobile keys. Police were notified that keys were taken from a truck and several cars while they were parked in the alley east of 6th Street, between Laurel and Maple Streets. Nothing else was disturbed.

80 years ago (1933)

Another old Brainerd landmark, probably the most outstanding memento linking the city to its earliest history, is doomed. Bids have been asked for the old courthouse, sheriff’s residence and jail on the property facing 4th St. between Main and Kingwood Streets.

100 years ago (1913)

The bustling town of Loerch, just to the east of Brainerd, was disturbed by a pistol shot from the center of that bailiwick. The second trick operator, just in town two days, was cleaning his shooting iron, caught the trigger and blew one finger off. He is hospitalized.
