This year. organizers said, the Crow Wing River Basin Forage Council, with support from the Leader Lions, has assembled an impressive group of speakers. The event is conducted at the Leader Community Center in Leader. Topics will cover estate planning, herd health, and herd management from a panel of local producers. The day’s schedule is set up to offer plenty of opportunity for the audience to get in on the discussion. The morning kicks off with a welcome from the Leader Lions and an update on the silvopasture project, introduced last year by Dr. Diomy Zamora.

Planning for farm succession is sometimes a difficult topic within families. Attorney Brian Carlson, Law Generations Law Office, will offer information on navigating the process including estate planning and ways to title real estate; passing assets to the next generation, minimizing taxes, ways to avoid probate and head off disputes.

Of particular interest to livestock producers may be Dr. Dan Larson, whose topic will be “Drought Management and Animal Nutrition for Reproductive Success.” Larson is a ruminant nutritionist for Great Plains Livestock Consulting, Inc. Coming from a background of hay production and beef operations, including cow/calf and feedlots large and small, he will bring a unique perspective that can be easily applied across many types of operations.

Dr. Gib Mouser, DVM, well known to producers in the region, will talk about “Herd Health and Mineral Nutrition.” Mouser’s experience as a veterinarian has a broad range from dairy work to a large animal practice, now in northern Minnesota.

The afternoon will feature a panel discussion on “Herd Health and Management” from the perspective of producers on the ground. The panelists include: Dan Caughey, who farms in partnership with his family near Brainerd. They run a dairy, beef and crop farm; Tim Hendrickson, Menahga, beef producer who grazes spring and fall calving pairs, custom raises cattle and backgrounds calves; Steve Koering, whose family runs a certified 60-cow dairy and farms 550 acres near Brainerd; and Miles Kuschel, who is a third-generation rancher in Ansel Township, and operates an Angus cow/calf operation with his wife Sarah.

The cost for the workshop is $10 per person, or $15 a couple, and includes lunch. The community center is located just north of the town of Leader, off Minnesota 64. For more information contact Mel Wiens at 218-894-2715; or Ed Maciej at 218-397-2389.
