Fire destroys rural Pine River barn
Firefighters from several departments braved frigid temperatures Monday afternoon while battling a barn fire on Cass County Road 17 in Maple Township south of Pine River.
Pine River Fire Chief Kevin Kleiner said the fire, reported at 12:23 p.m., destroyed a 50-foot by 80-foot barn and numerous items stored in it, including skid steers, welders and other equipment. The property is owned by Bill Tulenchik.
“It was a pretty significant loss,” Kleiner said of the barn. “It was a good sized fire. It really had a good head start on us, so in that case we try to save the surrounding structures.”
Firefighters were able to save a structure under construction about 6 feet away, Kleiner said. No injuries were reported, no livestock was lost and the cause of the fire is under investigation, he added.
Kleiner said fire fighting equipment iced up a little because of the cold temperatures, but departments made sure to rotate firefighters to avoid prolonged exposure to the elements.
“We had plenty of firefighters there,” he said.
Firefighters remained at the scene of the fire until about 4:30 p.m.
