20 years ago (1993)

Chris Studer, a 1989 Brainerd High School graduate, earned All-American status for his 8th place finish at 167 pounds in the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament at Iowa State. Studer, a junior at Boston University, finished the season with a 25-4 record.


30 years ago (1983)

Brainerd’s losing battle against forced fluoridation got a second wind as the city council came close to approving a motion to end fluoridation. The council delayed action until the water and light board states whether it will distribute unfluoridated water.

40 years ago (1973)

A group of Brainerd business and professional men have pledged $25,000 of their personal credit to save the old water tower. Mayor George Bedard said this will be added to $34,500 from Water & Light and $5,000 from BN Railroad to restore the landmark.

60 years ago (1953)

No 19-year-olds will be taken in the April draft call in Crow Wing County, according to the Selective Service office. The draft call was filled with 20-year-olds. Next month it may work down to those aged 19 years, 11 months, or perhaps to 19 years, 10 months.

80 years ago (1933)

With the Brainerd Community Relief Fund nearly depleted, and facing another month of meeting the needs of Brainerd’s distressed and suffering, officials urged citizens to pay up their pledges. Fund treasurer, B.L. Lagerquist, asked others to consider contributions.

100 years ago (1913)

George Rardin, who is engaged in brushing out land for F.B. Lynch at Gull Lake, was in the city today and paid the Dispatch a pleasant visit. During the winter he also cleared land for Alderman James Elder. Rardin says it will be a busy summer at Gull Lake.
