DAR publishes Crow Wing County birth records book
The Captain Robert Orr Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, has published a book that will be a resource for Brainerd area people interested in researching their family history.
The book contains Crow Wing County birth records from 1873-1899 and Faye Leach, regent for the chapter, said it’s the biggest project in the 35 years since the chapter was founded.
“We know how important this is to researchers,” Leach said. “It’s great resource. We took a lot of time with it to be as accurate as we could.”
The hardcover book is titled “Recorded Birth Records 1873-1899, Crow Wing County, Minnesota.”
The book contains transcribed and indexed records of the earliest births recorded in Crow Wing County, photos, history and the first map of the county showing townships.
To complement the book and aid researchers, a DVD with images of the original birth records is included for reference and additional information.
The project took about 16 months, Leach said. Many familiar names are included among the county’s early settlers.
“A lot of DeRosiers are in here,” she said.
Other familiar names include Swartouts, Dahls, Dullums and variations on the spelling of DeChaine.
Leach said the parents whose names are listed from this period came from 28 states and 26 countries. Among the foreign countries of origin that were common were Norway, Sweden, Germany and Canada, she said.
Information in the book covers the period 1873-1899, contains records for nearly 5,000 births and provides information for historians, genealogists, librarians and others interested in the history of the early settlers of Crow Wing County and the Brainerd area.
These transcribed records give the name of the child, date of birth, sex, race, and place of birth, name and place of birth of the father, name and place of birth of the mother and occupation of the father. The book contains a complete index of names.
Publication of this research resource was made possible with a grant from the Minnesota State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain Robert Orr Chapter funds and a generous member donation. Copies of the book are being donated to the Brainerd Public Library, The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Library, Minnesota Historical Society, Crow Wing County Historical Society and the National Genealogy Society.
