The female victim, Cheryl Pagel, 56, of rural Brainerd, was kayaking with a group on the river near the dam when her kayak capsized. Another member of the kayaking group, 63-year-old Jeffrey Kidder of Baxter, jumped into the river and was able to pull Pagel to the shoreline.

Pagel was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported by North Memorial Ambulance to Essentia Health St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd for hypothermia. Kidder didn't appear to have any injuries, the sheriff's office reported.

Assisting the sheriff's office at the scene were the Brainerd Police Department, Brainerd Fire Department and North Memorial Ambulance Service.
