Double fatality on Highway 210

STAPLES — Two people were killed Tuesday when the van they were in left the roadway, hit an approach and launched into trees off Highway 210 near Staples, reported the Minnesota State Patrol.

Names of the deceased are Daniel R. Waldron, 33, Fridley, and Amanda E. Cowan, 23, Milton. Cowan was a passenger in the van. It was not known whether Waldron was the driver or the passenger.

There were four additional passengers in the Chevrolet Astro van: Loren VanVickle, 23, Motley, was taken to Lakewood Health System in Staples where he was treated and then released. It was not known if VanVickle was a passenger or a driver; Renae L. Rautio, 28, Menahga, was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale where she was in critical condition; Bently R. Rautio, age under 1 year old, was not injured; and Katie L. Rautio, 8, was taken to the Staples hospital where she was treated and then transferred to North Memorial. Katie was in stable condition when she left the Staples hospital and was in fair condition at North Memorial.

The crash reported at 4:47 a.m.
