Rachel Ruhl, daughter of Melonee and Vince Ruhl, Pillager, will participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) in Chicago this summer. At the Forum on Medicine, students will join other high school students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in a career in medicine.
Throughout the 10-day forum, NYLF/MED will introduce students to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research and general practice. Students participate in site visits to medical schools and clinical facilities. A highlight of the Forum is a simulation in which students are presented with a fictional patient’s case history and must diagnose and develop a treatment plan for the patient. Ruhl is at student at Brainerd High School.
Britta Finck, daughter of Greg and Tracey Finck, Princeton, and granddaughter of Addie Finck, Deerwood, recently graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., with a major in music and a degree in music composition.
Cara Lynn (Wiltse) Moen, daughter of Sherry (Anhalt) and Steve Wiltse, Brainerd, recently graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School as a medical doctor. She is beginning her residency in Internal Medicine at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Caitlyn Alyce Felthous, daughter of Richard and Gloria Felthous, Pine River, and granddaughter of Art and Pearl Gensmer, Pine River, recently graduated from the Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. She is also a Pequot Lakes High School graduate.
Lucille Rian, a 2013 graduate of Aitkin High School, is the recipient of an art scholarship from Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis. She will begin her studies in June which can, upon graduation, be eligible for 24 college semester credits.
Marcus Comstock, son of Lowell and Joanne Comstock, Baxter, and Benjamin Stubbs, son of Brian and Jennifer Stubbs, Baxter, are recipients of a Presidential Distinction Scholarship from Concordia College, Moorhead.
Wil Schafer, son of John and Sara Schafer, Brainerd, and Heather Bowman, daughter of Tim and Linda Bowman, Baxter, are recipients of Excellence Scholarships from Concordia College, Moorhead.
Rachel Kmett, daughter of Loren and Melissa Kmett, Baxter, is the recipient of a Faculty Scholarship from Concordia College in Moorhead.
Brainerd graduates were honored recently with the Bridges Career Academy Achievement Award. The following students: Lataya Goedderz, Alex Balster, Alexis Jay, Colton Mogensen, Jadyn Young, Brady Bartishofski, Tiler Fluey, Marcus Comstock, Erica Embertson, Rachel Kmett, Christopher Busacker, Alayna Ernster, Dallas Barnhart, Stafford Thompson, Cody Caughey and Drake Barnhart were the first to earn a Certificate of Completion in the Bridges Career Academy and Workplace Connections Program. The Bridges program was developed in partnership with Brainerd High School administrators, counselors and faculty, the Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber, Central Lakes College and local business and industry partners.
Kelsey Binggeli, Baxter, was among the students named to the winter term dean’s list at Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill.
Brittny Brown was named to the fall President’s List at Bemidji State University. Brown is a double major in elementary education K-6 and Early Childhood Education and has practice taught preschool, first grade and is currently practice teaching Early Childhood Education.
Hailee Palony, daughter of Pete and Colleen Palony, Brainerd, recently received a $500 Upper Class Scholarship from Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
Tori Palony, daughter of Pete and Colleen Palony, Brainerd, was named to the Lake Superior College, Duluth, fall semester dean’s list.

The University of Minnesota-Crookston recognized student achievement in academics, athletics, service and leadership during its recent annual awards ceremony. Alexandra Buscher, a senior majoring in business management from Merrifield, was recognized with the Student Achievement Award, Outstanding Leadership in Campus Ministry, and Marketing/Management Academic Achievement Award. Clayton Lenk, a junior majoring in natural resources from Brainerd, was recognized with the Delta Theta Sigma-Dale Knotek Community Service Award.

Twenty-eight Minnesota high school seniors including Brainerd’s Megan Hintz were recently awarded a total of nearly $90,000 by Minnesota Masonic Charities (MMC) to pursue their college education.
St. Cloud State University student Kayla Cash of Brainerd was awarded a Richard Green Scholarship in the amount of $375 each semester for fall 2013 and spring 2014.

University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences recently announced Dr. Richard Herold, Merrifield, as a Doctor of Medicine class of 2013 award winner as a Gold Humanism Honor Society member.

Karianne Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Jones, Brainerd, received the Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award during the 2013 Academic Honor Awards Assembly at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. Outstanding students are traditionally recognized at the annual spring assembly.
