Red Cross honors Sluss for volunteer efforts
At its annual meeting in June, the American Red Cross Northern Minnesota Region honored its 2013 Annual Volunteer Award recipients, including Baxter resident Terry Sluss, who was named Regional Volunteer of the Year: Disaster.
“Our incredible volunteers are what make the Red Cross mission possible,” says Phil Hansen, CEO of the American Red Cross Northern Minnesota Region. “I can’t thank Terry enough for the generosity of his time, and the genuine care and support he gives during times of need.”
Sluss has worked to build a strong cohort of volunteers in the North Star Chapter, even hosting Disaster Action Team meetings in his home and skillfully mentoring new volunteers. In the past year he responded to both the Duluth floods and Superstorm Sandy, representing the Red Cross as a government liaison. While volunteering at Hurricane Sandy, he was appointed the operations manager for the state of New Jersey and Staten Island. Most recently, Sluss was selected as the deputy chair for the Regional Disaster Leadership team, a role in which he can spread his expertise and leadership throughout the Northern Minnesota Region.
The 2013 Volunteer Award winners were honored at the Joint Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition event on June 25, at the Profile Event Center. The American Red Cross Regional Volunteer Awards raise awareness about volunteers whose extraordinary actions contribute to the Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies. Award winners are recognized for leadership, teamwork, health and safety, outreach, behind the scenes work and disaster relief efforts.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Comprised of six community chapters, the Northern Minnesota Region serves 4.3 million people in 45 counties in northern Minnesota and three counties in western Wisconsin.
