Center for Lifelong Learning to present 'Dakota Conflict'

The Center for Lifelong Learning at Central Lakes College will present “Dakota Conflict,” a look at the expulsion of Dakota people from the state of Minnesota, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Central Lakes College Brainerd Campus.

Drawing on many different perspectives on the Dakota War, historian Annette Atkins will lead a conversation about the issues, conflicts, misunderstandings and lost opportunities that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of white settlers, the hanging of 38 Dakota men in Mankato in 1862 and the expulsion of Dakota people from the state. Among the questions she’ll explore include when the war began, the number of casualties, the good guys and the bad guys, the name of the war and how should it be remembered.

Atkins has a bachelor of arts from Southwest Minnesota State University, as well as a master’s and Ph.D from Indiana University. Since 1980, she has taught history at St. John’s University and the College of St. Benedict. She has also authored four books, including “Creating Minnesota” and, most recently, “Challenging Women Since 1913: The College of Saint Benedict.”

Cost to attend this program is free for CLL members. Cost for non-members is $6.

Registration is required and can be made by calling (218) 855-8118. Sponsorships and memberships are also available for the 2013-2014 season and more information can be obtained by calling the same number.
