Freezing rain and fire lead to busy weekend

Freezing rain and slick roads fueled numerous crashes Saturday.

The Brainerd Fire Department was paged to assist on several occasions. The fire department was initially called for crashes with injuries on County Road 3 and Legionville Road at 7:48 a.m. Saturday, at 8:43 a.m. Saturday at Highway 25 and Thompson Road and at 11:37 a.m. for a rollover on Business Highway 371 by Minnesota Teen Challenge. In all those cases, the department was canceled en route.

At 12:39 p.m. firefighters assisted law enforcement at a crash on Highway 210 east of the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport.

On other calls, the fire department responded to an alarm at 1:27 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Wild Wings in Baxter but were canceled en route. At 4:17 a.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to Arrowwood Lodge at Brainerd Lakes in Baxter for a broken water pipe for the sprinkler system.

At 1:49 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to the 1100 block of South Eighth Street for a fire in a garage. Fire crews were able to save the garage and a vehicle inside. The fire may have been started by embers taken from a fireplace in the house. At 4:02 p.m. firefighters were back on the scene checking smoke coming from the double roof on the garage, but the fire had not rekindled.
