Day care provider gets probation for being drunk on the job

MOORHEAD - A Moorhead woman was sentenced Thursday to two years’ probation after pleading guilty to child endangerment in taking care of children at her home day care while drunk last October.

Jayne Ann Cote, 54, testified Thursday in Clay County District Court that she had been drinking between 1 and 2 a.m. Oct. 2, the morning a parent reported to police that Cote seemed drunk when he dropped off his child. Cote told the court she also had taken hydrocodone at about 7 that morning.

A mother of one of the children, Casey Brand, wept as she told the court that Cote had been a trusted family friend who had claimed to her she had not fallen off the wagon three weeks before the incident. Court documents say that day parents reported Cote's speech was slurred and her pants were undone, and she lost her balance while placing an infant on the table.

Cote’s attorney said her client has undergone alcohol treatment and does not plan to seek work in child care again.
