Cloquet man stabs himself while being served warrant
BEMIDJI - A Cloquet man stabbed himself in the chest three times inside a Bemidji-area residence Tuesday afternoon when law enforcement arrived to serve him with a warrant, authorities said.
Wendell Lee Olson, 43, was served a Carlton County warrant for third-degree criminal sexual conduct on Averi Circle, about two miles west of Bemidji.
Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp said that when sheriff’s investigators and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents arrived, Olson barricaded himself in a bedroom and stabbed himself with a steak knife.
Officers heard the sound of a gun being slammed into battery and called for additional backup officers, according to a release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office. While additional officers were responding, investigators and agents talked Olson into surrendering.
“We’re glad nobody else in the house was hurt in the incident,” Hodapp said.
Olson was transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, then flown to Sanford in Fargo for additional treatment of his self-inflicted wounds.
A second man, Virgil Lee Roy, 46, of Bemidji, was arrested on theft charges out of Beltrami and Becker counties. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office said Olson was a guest at Roy’s residence.
