City seeks riverfront project committee volunteers
The Brainerd City Council is seeking volunteers to be part of a Mississippi River Partnership Project Steering Committee. The council is working with the University of Minnesota Center for Rural Design (CRD) to develop a riverfront design plan and the steering committee will provide project advice and recommendations to the city council.
Earlier this year the Brainerd City Council completed a strategic planning process and established the design and construction of a Mississippi River walk as one of its four strategic focus areas. However, before a decision on how and where a river walk can and should be constructed a riverfront design plan should be developed.
Proponents of the project said the river can be a place that residents and visitors access and enjoy year-round natural scenery along with a variety of active and passive recreational opportunities in harmony with a healthy river environment. It can be a place for community gatherings, trail systems, festivals and events. The riverfront area also has commercial redevelopment potential which would foster economic development.
Steering committee participation will be about a one year commitment and require attending four to six committee and community meetings. The first meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 with a location to be determined. Those interested in being a steering committee member will find an application online at www.ci.brainerd.mn.us. It may also be picked up at Brainerd City Hall or by calling 454-3402 to arrange for one to be sent to you. Also on the city website is a description of the steering committee role in the process. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 21.
