The Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition Tuesday recognized Rep. John Ward, DFL, Baxter, with the “Tourism Leadership Award.”

The Minnesota Legislature significantly increased tourism funding last session by boosting the Explore Minnesota Tourism budget by 66 percent.

“Tourism is invaluable in our area and affects so many either directly or indirectly,” Ward said. “The growth and prosperity of our tourism industry helps create jobs and appreciation for the natural beauty of our region.”

Doug Killian, chair of the Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition stated, “Rep. Ward has been a tireless supporter of tourism for many years. His leadership in the Minnesota House is greatly appreciated and we applaud his work.”

Tourism in the state of Minnesota is a $12.5 billion industry, supporting 245,400 leisure and hospitality jobs which represent 11 percent of total private sector employment. Tourism generates nearly $811 million in state sales tax revenues, which is 17 percent of Minnesota’s sales tax revenues.
