CAMP RIPLEY — The second Winter Warrior Sled Dog Race will be held Feb. 15-16, 2014 on Camp Ripley near Little Falls.

“The beautiful, snow-covered trails along the Mississippi are getting groomed; mushers are gearing up for a fantastic weekend of competition and sledding, and the dogs are howling to go,” said Sally Bair of the North Star Sled Dog Club.

Events will begin on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The six or 10 dog mid-distance teams will start and will be expected to complete the 25 or 45 mile course by 3:30 p.m. Sprint team races, consisting of four, six and 10 dog teams will be going on throughout the day.

Bob Bzdok of Rice will be defending his winning title in the 10-dog sprint event.

“Last year I competed in one of the best races I have ever been in and working with the Camp Ripley personnel was a real treat,” said Bzdok, event coordinator.

“The Staff on Camp Ripley was really impressed with last year’s event and looks forward to a great race this year,” said Staff Sgt. Tim Krouth of the Camp Ripley Visitors Bureau

Club has been organizing races in Minnesota since the 1960s. The Winter Warrior Race is part of North Star’s competition circuit.

“What a joy it has been to work with these guys on such a wonderful project. These trails are beautiful; this race is fantastic, I love it,” exclaimed Sally Bair.

Visitors wishing to attend the races only need to present a valid driver’s license to front gate personnel. For more information, go to www.nssdc.org. “It may all seem like chaos, but it is an organized chaos of barking canines, hot chocolate and hot dogs,” said Sally.
