Brainerd City Council: New president, vice president named for Brainerd council
Dale Parks will serve as president of the Brainerd City Council.
The council made the unanimous decision at its meeting Tuesday.
Parks replaces Bonnie Cumberland, who died recently, leaving the post and her at-large seat vacant.
Parks was serving as vice president. The new holder of that position is now Dave Pritschet.
Neither position had any other candidates and both Parks and Pritschet received unanimous approval.
With leadership roles filled, the council then put a call out to residents to apply for the vacant at-large seat.
The new city council member will finish out Cumberland’s term, which is over at the end of this year. They must then run again in the election if they want to hold the seat.
Applications for the at-large seat are due to Brainerd City Hall by 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 26.
The applicant names will then go to the council. There will be a special city council meeting at 6 p.m. on March 10, where each applicant will give a short presentation, up to five minutes, to speak to why they should be chosen. The council will then use a majority vote on who to name for the spot.
City council member Mary Koep said “everyone should have the opportunity to speak.”
“We want this to be as open as possible,” she added.
City staff have already received letters of interest and resumes for the vacant position, but each will be returned so the applicants can follow the process that the council adopted Tuesday.
Applications are available online or at City Hall.
