Birdhouse Gourds presentation scheduled

A presentation called Birdhouse Gourds is planned 5:30 p.m. March 3 in the main level conference room at the Northland Arboretum Visitor Center.

The presenter is Deb Hoffman, a Master Gardener. The presentation will focus on the pros and cons of starting seeds indoors or planting directly in the soil.

Hoffman will touch on soil preparations and fertilizers.

Trellised or grown directly on the soil? To trim or not to trim? When are they ready to pick? Harvesting and drying also will be explained.

Making birdhouses from the gourds will be explained with plenty of time for questions.

Hoffman and her husband have been involved with the Master Gardener program since completing the core course in 2007. Flowers are her favorite pastime — growing focusing on perennials in organized plantings along with additional annuals and shrubs.
