New outdoor activity group to meet

Are you a young adult with a knack for the great outdoors or trying new activities? Are you sick and tired of sitting at home with nothing to do in these cold temperatures? A planning meeting for the new Lakes Area League of Activities (LALA) group will take place at 6 p.m., March 11, at Sunshine Kitchen and Moonshine Lounge, 723 Mill Ave. in Brainerd. Those who attend are asked to bring a list of possible adventures or activities they would like to try and the group will figure out a way to get that cost down by using a group-rate system.

The idea of LALA was generated by Katie Kaufman, a new lakes area resident who serves as the city of Brainerd’s recreation specialist.

“I am new to the area, so I wanted to make friends with people who are interested in living a thrilling and healthy lifestyle,” she said. “Instead of going to the bars or spending my money on materialistic things, I would rather spend my money making memories and challenging myself to learn new things.”

The idea came to Kaufman when she realized how adventurous and eye opening it can be to try something you never would have without somebody to share the experience with.

In addition to coordinating gatherings that utilize the area’s myriad opportunities for free fun — such as mountain biking in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area or playing a round of disc golf at the new St. Mathias course — LALA will also work to get inexpensive group rates on activities.

Some possible paid excursions for the group include trying out archery or renting standup paddleboards at a local lake.

“I believe this group has a lot of potential in this area because there are so many options and opportunities out there because of our geographic region,” Kaufman said. “I strongly hope that community members invest in the group as a resource to make friends, live well and invite excitement into their lives.”
