UPDATE: Final Minnesota legislative bills may be passed in middle of the night

Food issues topic of series at HDT in Pine River

PINE RIVER — Happy Dancing Turtle in Pine River and Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will sponsor a series of five free public meetings on food issues.

The dates will be every two weeks on Thursdays, starting March 6, at the Hunt Utilities Group (HUG) campus in Pine River. A potluck supper will start at 5:30 p.m. and participation is optional. The programs will start at 6 p.m.

• On March 6, the topic will be the experiences of beginning farmers, featuring the film, “The Greenhorns,” and a panel discussion.

• On March 20, there will be a further panel discussion on local foods and organic production.

• On April 3, there will be a discussion of “Toxic Taters” and the use of chemical agents in the growing process of potatoes.

• On April 17, there will be a film on bees and discussion with beekeepers.

• On May 1, the topic will be GMOs, genetically modified organisms, with a film featuring Jeffrey Smith, acclaimed author of “Seeds of Deception.”

More details will be available before the meetings.

The HUG campus is just off Highway 371 west of Pine River at 2331 Dancing Wind Road S.W. on County Road 2. All are welcome to come with questions and experiences or to learn and enjoy talking about food.
