ST. PAUL - Rep. Kurt Zellers will not seek re-election to his state House post, he said on Monday, but continues devoting his time to his governor campaign.

Minnesota candidates cannot run for two offices at once, so he could not seek re-election as long as he was running for governor.

The Republican who grew up near Devils Lake, N.D., was speaker of the House in 2011 and 2012.

Zellers announced he was running for governor last summer, and has stayed near the bottom of the pack of Republicans in most polls. Most GOP candidates likely will be part of a primary election this summer, regardless of how they do in the state party convention in the spring.

He will remain a state representative through early next year, serving Maple Grove and Osseo in the northwestern Twin Cities.

Among Zeller's accomplishments since being elected in 2003 was sponsoring a bill to impose life in prison sentences for violent offenders after the murder of University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin. Zellers also attended UND in Grand Forks.
