■ Pillager educator receives award

PILLAGER — Mark Wolhart, from Pillager Area Charter School, was recognized for his 28 years of service to children in alternative programs at the 31st Annual State Conference of the Minnesota Association for Alternative Programs (MAAP).

Wolhart was also recognized for his work on the MAAP Board of Directors, numerous committees and the student organization MAAP STARS.

■ Growing local session to be held

Growing More, Growing Local with Season Extension will take place at 3 p.m. on March 20 at the Crow Wing County Land Services Building, Meeting Room 2 (lower level), 322 Laurel St., Brainerd.

With the demand for local foods on the rise, the high cost of fossil fuels and climate change affecting growers nationwide, this session will review how Minnesota growers are engaged in a variety of season extension techniques. Arlene Jones, Farm on St. Mathias and SPROUT MN food hub, will discuss solar thermal technology, hydroponics and special crop lighting to continue year round growing. This session will also review high tunnel structures, crops, heating, trellising, intercropping and more.

Following the presentation and discussion, there will be time for networking with the speaker and audience participants.
