Hay bales catch fire in Pierz barn

PIERZ — The Pierz Fire Department responded to a barn fire at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday on the 29000 block of 231th Street in Pierz.

Pierz Fire Chief Brian Boser said the property owner was able to get the 50 livestock animals out of the barn, which was filled with hay, before firefighters arrived on scene. Firefighters were able to gain access through the roof and side door of the barn to extinguish the fire. The barn had minimal damage from the fire.

Boser said it appears that heat was created by the hay bales that self-ignited a fire.

About 13 firefighters responded to the fire. They cleared the scene around 11:30 a.m.
