ST. PAUL - Fifty Minnesota youths were poisoned by e-cigarette juice last year, the Minnesota Department of Health reported Tuesday.

That was 10 times more than the year before, and accounted for 23 percent of all of the state’s teen and child tobacco-related poisonings in 2013, a Health Department news release said.

The data came from the Minnesota Poison Control System.

E-cigarette juice is a term for the liquid used in tobacco vaporizers, according to the Health Department. The vials of liquid can contain fatal levels of nicotine for children, who may mistake them for candy or something to eat, the news release said.

But none of last year’s poisonings resulted in hospitalizations or serious illness, state Health Commissioner Ed Ehlinger said.

Symptoms of nicotine poisoning may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and/or difficulty breathing, the news release said. A fatal dose of nicotine for an adult is between 50 and 60 milligrams. E-juice containers may include between 18 and 24 milligrams.
