Man smashes federal building, courthouse windows

DULUTH - Duluth police arrested a man just after 6 a.m. Friday after eyewitnesses reported that he was smashing windows at the downtown Civic Center.

Witnesses said they heard a loud banging in the area and at first assumed some type of construction was going on. One maintenance worker said that after the man smashed windows at the courthouse doors, he sat on the nearby steps and waited for police to arrest him. The suspect used some type of metal bar, the worker said.

The worker said police asked the man why he didn’t smash any windows at the third government building on the square, City Hall, and the suspect said he didn’t have any problems with the city.

Maintenance workers from the St. Louis County Courthouse and federal building were cleaning up glass from the front doors of the buildings. Two newspaper boxes were damaged as well.
