Russian troops trying to seize Ukraine navy base in Crimea
SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine, March 24 (Reuters) - Russian troops were trying to seize a Ukrainian naval base in Feodosia on Monday, one of the few military facilities still flying a Ukrainian flag in Crimea after Russia's annexation, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.
Vladislav Seleznyov said Russian forces were trying to force their way in with the help of helicopters. A soldier inside the base confirmed they were under attack.
Russia said its flag is now flying over 189 Ukrainian military installations in the Crimea, the defence ministry said on Sunday, two days after President Vladimir Putin signed laws completing Russia's annexation of the Black Sea peninsula.
"The flag of the Russian Federation has been raised at 189 military units and institutions of the Ukrainian armed forces stationed on the territory of the Republic of Crimea," the ministry said in a statement, cited by news agency RIA.
